Terrifying Video Documents the Moment Orca Whales Prey on a Shark in Mexico

Khaberni - A wildlife photographer recorded a horrific scene of a pod of killer whales tearing a shark to pieces and feeding on its remains, in an incident that reflects the natural dominance of these apex predators in the oceans.

The clip, filmed by wildlife guide Ivan Bodan in Mexico, shows three massive whales passing the body of the blue shark among themselves, before one dives towards the ocean floor taking the remains of the prey with it.

Bodan said that killer whales often target shark livers, which are rich in oils and fats, because of the high-calorie content they provide, making them a valuable meal in the marine food chain.

He added that what appeared in the video is the feeding phase that immediately follows the predation process, where several whales gather around the body and take turns eating and sharing it.

The blue shark is one of the most common types of sharks, and it is a strong predator in its own right, but it was no match for the killer whales, known for their extreme intelligence and ability to adapt their hunting methods according to the type of prey.

Bodan explained that predation of sharks by killer whales has been documented in various parts of the world, often revealing specialized feeding strategies, where the whales target the fat-rich liver, a crucial energy source for maintaining their massive body mass.

This scene, according to experts, is a valuable addition for researchers to understand the behavior of killer whales, especially since direct documentation of such interactions is still limited, making each recorded incident contribute to a clearer picture of the role of these animals as the most important apex predators in marine ecosystems.
