Minister of Agriculture No justification yet for imposing price ceilings on vegetables

Khaberni - Agriculture Minister Saieb Al-Kharaisat sees, on Tuesday, that there is no justification yet for imposing price ceilings on vegetables specifically.

He added in his talk to "Al-Mamlaka" that Jordan does not import vegetables, but only some types of fruits.

He pointed out that the agriculture sector is secure, and the self-sufficiency rate from crops has reached 61%.

He spoke about the daily needs of tomato crops, which amount to 450-500 tons daily.

He noted that during the holy month of Ramadan, there was an increase in the price of tomatoes, where 180-200 tons were entering the market due to agricultural production in Ramadan, noting that today the market intake of tomatoes fully meets the local need.

He explained that if the ministry found an increase in prices, it would temporarily stop exporting according to the needs, pointing out that supply and demand control the price.

He expected that in the upcoming month of April, vegetable prices would decrease due to the expected abundance of production.

"We have tools to monitor prices (...) The moderate price for tomatoes currently ranges from 70-80 piasters per kilo (...) In case of any price surges, we coordinate with the Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Supply on this matter," according to Kharaisat.
