How does fluid deficiency affect blood sugar levels

Khaberni - Dehydration can lead to elevated blood sugar levels, especially in diabetics, where glucose concentration increases as water volume in the blood decreases; this raises sugar levels without an actual increase in quantity.

When body fluids decrease, blood volume decreases and the sugar becomes more concentrated; making hydration essential for controlling blood sugar levels whether you are diabetic or not.

For diabetics, hydration is particularly important, as they are more prone to fluctuations in blood sugar levels and dehydration.

Diabetes prevents the body from producing or using insulin effectively, which is the hormone responsible for moving sugar from the blood into cells to produce energy. When blood sugar rises, it can lead to osmotic diuresis, where the kidneys draw fluids into the urine; this increases water loss and exacerbates dehydration.

Electrolytes play a key role in controlling blood sugar levels, as they help regulate fluid balance in the body and support nerve and muscle functions. 

An imbalance of electrolytes due to dehydration or high sugar can disrupt blood sugar levels. Electrolytes can be obtained from certain drinks and foods, with the need to monitor carbohydrate content and measure sugar levels before and after consumption for diabetics.

Regarding the daily amount of water, the general guidelines recommend about 11.5 cups for women and 15.5 cups for men, including water found in foods and other liquids.

This amount should be increased during exercise, exposure to heat, loss of fluids due to illness, or taking diuretic medications, as well as when blood sugar levels are high.
