Axios Arrangements for Holding a USIran Meeting in Islamabad This Week

Khaberni - An Israeli official disclosed to Axios that there are ongoing communications to arrange a meeting between Iranian and American officials in the Pakistani capital, Islamabad, later this week, as part of mediation efforts led by several countries to launch a negotiation process between the two sides.

According to the official, the consultations include discussing the participation of the Iranian Parliament Speaker, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, alongside other Iranian officials, while the American side may be represented by prominent envoys including Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, with the possibility that the Vice President of the United States, JD Vance, might be the highest representative of Washington in the meeting.

The official explained that Witkoff and Kushner are already conducting talks with Ghalibaf, as part of these preliminary efforts to hold the anticipated meeting.

He mentioned that Israel was aware of mediation attempts led by several countries to start talks between the United States and Iran, but was surprised by US President Donald Trump's statements discussing the progress of these contacts and the existence of "major points of agreement" between the two sides.

The Financial Times reported on Monday, citing informed sources, that Pakistan is playing the role of the main mediator seeking to end the American-Israeli war on Iran.

The sources indicated that the Pakistani Army Chief, Asim Munir, spoke with US President Donald Trump on Sunday.

These developments coincide with Trump's announcement that Washington has conducted "constructive" talks with Tehran, and that both parties are eager to reach an agreement, which enhances the likelihood of a direct meeting in the coming days.
