Spring Equinox Rains Enhance Rainy Season in Jordan

Khaberni - Raed Al-Khatab, the director of the Meteorological Department, stated that the kingdom was influenced at the beginning of this year's spring equinox by rainy conditions due to instability and a low-pressure system, which contributed to enhancing the rainy season and increasing the rates in various regions.

During the period (19–22 March 2026), the kingdom was affected by a series of low-pressure systems, accompanied by unstable weather. This led to intermittent rainfall in most areas of the kingdom, which was sometimes heavy and accompanied by thunderstorms and hail in some areas, causing flash floods in valleys and low-lying areas.

Al-Khatab added that the weather ranged from partly cloudy to cloudy and relatively cold in most areas, while it was mildly warm in the Jordan Valley, Dead Sea, and Aqaba areas, with clear activity in the speed of the westerly winds, which were sometimes accompanied by strong gusts, leading to dust storms especially in the desert areas.

He mentioned that the amount of rainfall recorded during this period contributed to increasing the current rainy season's total for 2025/2026, with percentages ranging from (1% – 23%) of the general seasonal average, reflecting the importance of this weather condition in supporting the rainy season and enhancing water reserves.

Al-Khatab also noted that the Suma station in northern areas recorded the highest total rainfall of (51.1) mm, which is 12% of its general seasonal average, followed by Ras Munif station in Ajloun with a total of (50.9) mm at 9%, and then Shoubak station in Ma'an with a total of (50.6) mm at 21%. The Rabba station in Karak recorded (47.9) mm at 23%, and Tafilah station (44.5) mm at 23%, followed by Salt station (42) mm at 8%, and then Irbid station (40) mm at 9%.

In the capital, Amman, King Hussein Gardens station recorded (40) mm at 8% of its general annual average, while the University of Jordan station recorded (35.5) mm at 7%.

Al-Khatab clarified that with the gradual decrease in weather activity starting from the evening of Sunday, the status of the current rainy season until 9:00 AM on 22/03/2026 is classified within its general averages for this time of the year in the northern and central areas (except the northern Jordan Valley), while it exceeds its general averages in the rest of the kingdom.
