Unprecedented security alert for BTS concert Antidrone systems and 7000 police officers

Khaberni - The South Korean capital, Seoul, is preparing for the return of the most successful band in the world in recent years, BTS. It is expected that around 260,000 people will gather on Saturday at Gwanghwamun Square, where the seven members will perform their first show together since October 2022.

Show against a historical backdrop
The one-hour concert will be broadcast against the backdrop of a 14th-century gate that leads to the royal palace. It will feature new songs from the band’s anticipated album "Arirang". Millions of viewers around the world can also watch the concert live on Netflix, which has signed a deal for its broadcast.

More than just a music group
For South Korea, the return of BTS is not just a resumption of a K-pop group's activities, but the return of a cultural force that has helped enhance Korea's soft power through its unique blend of vibrant pop and electric dance moves.

BTS was at the peak of its fame when its members had to join the mandatory military service, starting with Jin in 2022, while Suga completed his service last June, paving the way for the full return of the band.

Their global tour, featuring 82 shows in over 30 cities starting from Singapore and Tokyo to Munich and Los Angeles, is set to begin next month.

Intense security preparations
Authorities have mobilized massive resources, lighting up landmarks, covering parts of the city in the band’s signature purple, and deploying about 7,000 police officers including SWAT teams equipped with anti-drone systems to manage the crowds at the square.

With the transformation of the city center into a huge open stadium, access to dozens of buildings will be restricted and three nearby metro stations will be closed. The square will be monitored via 31 entry points equipped with metal detectors before, during, and after the concert.

Temporary firearm restrictions
Despite South Korea's strict gun control laws, civilians will be temporarily banned from retrieving any stored weapons at police facilities during the concert.

The scale of the preparations has left some citizens questioning their necessity, saying that deploying police and fire services in this manner could leave other areas without response in case of emergencies. Some deputies are concerned that Netflix, being the sole platform to broadcast the event, requires large public resources.

Economic and cultural impact
The Netflix deal includes live broadcasting rights, in addition to a documentary about the band's reunion, a significant marketing success given the massive investments in the Korean entertainment industry.

Free tickets were released in stages, causing dismay among some fans who felt that chances of obtaining tickets were diminishing. They launched campaigns to prevent resale and ensure attendance.
