The Strangest Journey in 2026 An Indian Plane Flies for 8 Hours in the Air Without a Destination

Khaberni - Passengers of the "Air India" flight headed to the Canadian city of Vancouver had an exceptional and shocking experience, after spending nearly eight hours in the air on a "flight to nowhere", ending with their return to the departure airport in the Indian capital, New Delhi, due to an unprecedented administrative and technical error.

The incident began when Flight (AI185) took off from New Delhi airport at exactly 11:34 AM, taking an eastward route towards Canada.

About four hours into the flight, specifically when the aircraft entered Chinese airspace near the "Kunming" area, the company's operations management discovered a "legal loophole"; it turned out that the aircraft, a (Boeing 777-200LR), did not have the official permits required to enter Canadian airspace or to land at its airports.

The cause of this confusion was that the Canadian Aviation Authority grants operating permits based on "aircraft model" rather than to the airline company absolutely.

In the case of "Air India", the official approval granted to the company was limited only to operating its fleet of (Boeing 777-300ER) for flights headed to Canada.

Due to the use of a different model (200LR) that had not yet received the necessary regulatory approval, it was legally impossible to complete the flight, as it would face being denied entry into Canadian airspace or subject to severe penalties on the company.

The return flight took a similar amount of time, with the aircraft logging a total flight time of 8 hours, landing back exactly where it had taken off from.

For its part, "Air India" issued a statement describing the incident as the result of an "operational error", confirming that the decision to return was made in accordance with standard operating procedures to ensure compliance with international laws.

The statement said: "The aircraft landed safely, and all passengers and crew disembarked without any incidents.. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused to our guests."

The company explained that ground teams in New Delhi arranged the necessary assistance for the passengers, including hotel accommodations, and made efforts to ensure they reached their destination as soon as possible, with a replacement flight departing the next morning with all passengers on board.

Aviation experts believe that this incident will result in substantial financial costs for the company; as a "Boeing 777" typically consumes between 8 to 9 tons of fuel per hour, which means a huge amount of fuel was wasted on a flight that did not achieve its goal, in addition to the costs of accommodation, compensation, and additional operational fees.
