Khaberni - The British magazine "New Statesman" revealed that Ukraine's population, which exceeded 40 million in 2014, dropped to about 20 million by 2025, a sharp decline over a decade.
The magazine post on the "X" platform, quoting an unnamed British official, stated: "Ukraine's population, estimated in 2014 to be over 40 million, dropped to about 20 million by 2025".
This estimate aligns with a survey conducted by the "IFO" research institute, which showed that less than 50% of Ukrainian citizens are ready to return to their homes even in the most optimistic scenario.
In 2023, Ella Lebanova, director of the Ukrainian Institute of Demography and Social Studies, stated that the country's population could range between 26 and 35 million by 2033, noting that more than half of the citizens who left Ukraine would not return.
These reports come at a time when the ongoing Ukrainian conflict continues to have a profound impact on the country's population and demographic structure, amid laws imposed by Vladimir Zelensky to increase the army's numbers and compulsory mobilization of citizens.
