Khaberni - The Economic Court in Cairo has issued a new verdict in the case accusing the media figure and interior designer Maha El Sagheer, ex-wife of the artist Ahmed El Sakka, of usurping the intellectual property rights of artistic paintings, where the court decided to accept her appeal against the imprisonment sentence previously issued against her.
The court ruled to cancel the one-month imprisonment penalty previously imposed on her, settling instead to uphold the fine estimated at 10,000 Egyptian pounds.
The details of the crisis trace back to Maha El Sagheer's appearance on the program "With You Mona El Shazly," where she showcased several paintings and designs, affirming to millions that they were her own artistic works. However, investigations and competent authorities revealed a surprise.
It turned out that the designs originally belonged to a Danish artist. The media figure had plagiarized them and presented them in the program under the claim of owning them. This prompted the authorities to refer her to the Economic Court on charges of artistic theft and violating intellectual property rights.
It is worth noting that the first-instance court had issued a verdict sentencing Maha El Sagheer to one month in prison and a fine of 10,000 Egyptian pounds.
After the media figure filed an appeal, the Economic Court examined the defenses and concluded in its final judgment to maintain the fine as the final penalty, cancelling the imprisonment sentence, and upholding the rest of the sanctions decreed in the previous verdict.
