Khaberni - Mexico has opened the door for hosting Iran's matches in the 2026 World Cup, despite the rejection of this proposal by the International Federation of Association Football "FIFA".
Iranian Sports Minister Ahmad Donya Mali stated a few days ago that Iran could not participate in the 2026 World Cup after the United States killed Iranian leader Ali Khamenei.
Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump recently said: "We welcome the participation of the Iranian football team in the World Cup, but I don't think it's appropriate for them to be here, for the safety and security of their players".
The Iranian Football Federation and the Iranian government have affirmed that the team will participate and will not withdraw, with a proposal to move their matches to Mexico instead of America.
Mexico welcomes hosting Iran
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed that her country would be ready to host the Iranian team.
Sheinbaum said in remarks carried by the British newspaper "The Sun": "For Mexico, there's no problem.. It's simply a logistical issue for FIFA".
She added: "It's possible, as they were going to go to the United States".
And she concluded: "Can they have the matches here in Mexico?.. The matter is under consideration and we will inform you of the details at the appropriate time".
A spokesperson for the International Federation of Association Football "FIFA" said: "We are in regular contact with all participating member associations, including Iran, to discuss planning for the 2026 Football World Cup".
He added: "FIFA looks forward to the participation of all competing teams according to the match schedule announced on December 6, 2025".
What group is Iran in for the 2026 World Cup?
The draw placed Iran in Group Seven at the 2026 World Cup, alongside Egypt, Belgium, and New Zealand.
Iran's national team is scheduled to play their three group-stage matches in the United States, playing two in Los Angeles and one in Seattle.
If both the United States and Iran finish second in their groups, the teams could meet in a knockout match on July 3, in Dallas.
