UNICEF Announces Investigation into Suspected Smuggling of Tobacco Products in Its Aid to Gaza

Khaberni - The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) announced on Wednesday, the initiation of an internal investigation after Israel suspended the entry of its aid into the Gaza Strip from Egypt the previous day, due to an "attempted smuggling" of tobacco products.

UNICEF stated in a press release, "it was notified by the Israeli authorities of the discovery of tobacco and nicotine packages in a shipment of personal hygiene items belonging to UNICEF that was being transported by a commercial transport company to Gaza", adding that it immediately commenced "a full internal investigation into the matter".

It continued: "Despite the preventive measures we have implemented, attempts to smuggle such materials in shipments from humanitarian organizations occur from time to time," indicating that it enforces a "zero tolerance policy" against smuggling.
