Khaberni - Majed Al-Ansari, the official spokesman for the Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs, described the Israeli targeting of facilities associated with the "South Pars" gas field in Iran as a "dangerous and irresponsible step," amid the current military escalation in the region.
Al-Ansari, on Wednesday, stated that the targeted field is an extension of the North gas field in Qatar, warning that "targeting the energy infrastructure represents a threat to global energy security and to the peoples and environment of the region."
He emphasized "the need to avoid targeting vital facilities," calling on all parties to exercise restraint, adhere to international law, and work towards de-escalation to preserve the security and stability of the region.
Facilities in a major gas field on Iran's southern coast facing the Gulf were hit by American-Israeli strikes, causing a fire on Wednesday, according to the official state television in the Islamic Republic of Iran.
The channel reported from Ehsan Jahanian, deputy governor of Bushehr where the facilities are located in southern Iran, "Moments ago, a section of the gas facilities in the South Pars special economic energy zone in Asaluyeh was targeted with projectiles launched by the American-Zionist enemy."
It was noted that firefighting teams are working to contain the fire that broke out at the site.
According to Axios, senior Israeli officials stated that the Israeli Air Force targeted a natural gas processing facility in southwestern Iran, marking the first strike of its kind targeting this vital sector of the Iranian economy.
The officials mentioned that the strike was conducted with coordination and approval from the US administration, indicating an expansion of target range to include energy infrastructure.
The semi-official Tasnim Agency reported that several facilities in the "South Pars" gas field near Bushehr were targeted, noting that emergency teams rushed to the site and are working to extinguish a fire caused by the attack.
Targeting gas facilities is a precedent, as the US administration had previously objected to an Israeli strike targeting oil warehouses in Tehran, requesting that energy infrastructure not be targeted without its approval.
Commenting on the developments, US President Donald Trump previously stated on the platform "Truth Social": "Remember, for all those 'fools,' Iran, from everyone's point of view, is the world's leading sponsor of terrorism... we are swiftly putting them out of business."
Iran and Qatar share the South Pars/North Gas Field, the largest gas field in the world, which supplies about 70% of the Iranian Republic's gas needs for local consumption.
Tehran began developing its part of the field in the late 1990s.
Israel had previously targeted Iranian gas facilities associated with this field during the twelve-day war it launched against the Islamic Republic in June 2025.
