Warning about Deceptive Electronic Games A Call to Enhance Digital Awareness Among Students

Khaberni - The National Center for Curriculum Development and Assessment affirmed the importance of enhancing awareness of the safe and responsible use of digital content, in light of the warning issued by the General Security Directorate regarding certain electronic games that may appear suitable on the surface, despite containing content inappropriate for children and adolescents, and the potential negative psychological and behavioral effects they may leave.

The Center explained that this approach aligns with its national role in keeping up with new developments and challenges that students may face in the educational and digital environments, and addresses them educationally within the national curricula, which enhances digital awareness and responsible behavior, and supports the development of a student's personality capable of safe and balanced interaction with technology. This also coincides with the Digital Skills subject initiated by the center as part of a comprehensive educational development plan targeting grades from first elementary to twelfth.

The Center pointed out that concepts of digital safety, digital citizenship, digital health, and digital rights and responsibilities form part of the educational approaches related to the Digital Skills subject, contributing to enabling students to understand and responsibly engage with the digital environment. The curricula also address these issues from psychological and social perspectives; the subjects of Psychology and Sociology present some effects associated with unbalanced use of technology and electronic devices, such as social isolation and addictive behavior, reflecting the comprehensiveness of the educational treatment of these topics.

The Center emphasized that its educational responsibility is not limited to developing academic knowledge and skills, but also extends to keeping pace with digital transformations and renewed challenges that affect students, and incorporating elements to enhance their awareness and safety and their ability to responsibly use technology in their daily lives. The Center also confirmed that addressing these types of challenges requires an integrated approach among the family, the school, and national institutions, with conscious monitoring of what is presented to children and adolescents, verifying the appropriateness of content for the targeted age group, and enhancing dialogue with them about the safe use of digital content, contributing to a safer and more aware educational and digital environment.
