Is the sighting of the Shawwal crescent possible The Jordanian Astronomical Society answers

Khaberni - A report issued by the Crescent Monitoring Committee at the Jordanian Astronomical Society indicates that the duration of the crescent of Shawwal after sunset in Jordan is about 36 minutes, while the moon's age at sunset reaches 15 hours and 7 minutes, reflecting precise and sensitive observation conditions on the evening of Thursday, March 19, 2026.

According to the report, the sighting of the crescent in Jordan is possible, albeit difficult, and is limited to the use of a telescope only, provided that the atmosphere is completely clear.

The report also indicates that Thursday corresponds to the 29th of Ramadan 1447 AH, with the conjunction occurring at 3:46 AM Jordan time, while the sunset in Amman is at 18:53, and the moon sets at 19:28, granting the crescent a limited duration of 36 minutes after sunset.

The astronomical calculations show that the elongation is 7.3 degrees, and the moon rises about 5.3 degrees above the horizon, with an azimuth difference estimated at 1.3 degrees to the right of the sun, these data make the sighting of the crescent with the naked eye practically impossible.

Furthermore, the attached astronomical charts show a global variation in the possibility of sighting the crescent according to the "Odeh" criterion, where sighting is possible in some regions using optical devices, while it is impossible in other areas.

The report is based on calculations by the "Precise Timings" program prepared by the astronomer Muhammad Odeh, along with simulation models for the position of the crescent in the western horizon of Amman.
