Khaberni - US President Donald Trump stated today, Monday, that he will have the honor of "annexing Cuba".
He told reporters: "I think I will have the honor of annexing Cuba, it would be a good thing, indeed a great honor".
He added: "I can liberate or annex it, I think I can do whatever I want with it".
Previously, Trump had announced that his country was in talks with Cuba, but he emphasized that the Iranian file is a priority on his administration’s agenda.
Trump's statements came days after Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel confirmed talks with the American president last Friday.
The relationship between Washington and Havana has experienced rapid developments since the beginning of 2026, as part of the "maximum pressure" strategy adopted by the Trump administration.
The major turning point came in January 2026, when the United States overthrew Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, Cuba's main ally. Trump signed an executive order imposing tariffs on any country providing Cuba with oil, which led to deprivation of Venezuelan supplies that Cuba had relied on for decades.
As a result, no oil has entered Cuba in the past three months, causing a severe energy crisis with long hours of electricity cuts daily, and paralysis in healthcare, education, and transportation services.
