Iran Requests to Move its World Cup Group Matches to Mexico

Khaberni  - Iran has proposed moving its World Cup soccer matches from the United States to Mexico due to the ongoing war in the Middle East.

Ahmed Doniamali, the Iranian Minister of Sports, stated in comments carried by the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) that they might consider the proposal with the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA).

Doniamali said: "I hope the conditions will be conducive for our sons to ultimately participate in the World Cup."

He added: "It is important to use all sporting aspects precisely to ensure the continued possibility of participation. Communication with FIFA has been made for comment."

The Iranian team is scheduled to meet Belgium, New Zealand, and Egypt in the group stage, with the three matches to be held in the United States, which is co-hosting the tournament with Mexico and Canada from June 11 to July 19, 2026.

Doniamali had excluded Iran's participation in the World Cup last Wednesday.

The next day, U.S. President Donald Trump said it was not "appropriate" for Iran to play for security reasons. Iran rejected this claim, asserting that decisions are exclusively made by FIFA.
