Doctor Debunks Common Myth About Wine Benefits

Khaberni - Dr. Marina Saounova, a psychiatrist and addiction specialist, reported that the prevalent belief that wine contributes to lowering cholesterol levels is incorrect information.

According to Dr. Saounova, regular consumption of wine does more harm than any potential benefits to the body.

The expert explained that the potential benefits of red wine are limited to occasional and moderate consumption, such as one glass a month, provided there are no contraindications such as pregnancy or diseases of the liver or cardiovascular system. In such cases, antioxidants can reduce oxidative stress and slightly improve blood lipid levels, but the effect is practically negligible and does not justify the risks of regular consumption.

The doctor also cautioned against light wines and fruit wines, as they can negatively affect the digestive system, heart, brain, and endocrine glands. Despite these drinks being considered safe due to their natural origin, studies indicate that they contain high concentrations of sugar and ethanol, which increases the burden on the liver and pancreas.

Studies on the metabolism of alcohol and sugar have shown that the combination of ethanol and easily digestible carbohydrates increases the risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, insulin resistance, and obesity, even with moderate consumption. She added that fruit wine often causes a faster rise in blood sugar levels compared to sugar-free wine, increasing oxidative stress and inflammation of the blood vessels.
