Coach of the Iranian Womens National Team Reveals Reasons for Players Seeking Asylum in Australia

Khaberni -  In a striking statement revealing the extent of psychological pressures faced by the Iranian women's football team, coach Marzieh Jafari held the Iranian media responsible for the defection of a number of players during the Asian Cup tournament held in Australia.

Jafari confirmed that provoking comments and accusations of treason coming from the heart of Tehran were the main driving force behind some players' decision to request political asylum in Australia.

According to Reuters, Jafari explained in the statement, which was published on the Iranian Federation's "Telegram" account before being deleted, that the turning point began after the opening match against South Korea, when the players chose to remain silent during the playing of the national anthem.

This stance was met with harsh criticism from Iranian broadcaster Mohammad Reza Shahbazi, who described them on state television as "traitors during war".
Jafari said: "The biggest mistake was made by those at home who failed to understand the heavy psychological atmosphere and attacked their own countrywomen.. I am certain that if it weren't for this attack, no player would have thought about staying in Australia".

The coach revealed details about the Australian intervention, noting that local police individually contacted the players to persuade them to stay, due to the tense political situation.
