Khaberni - The European Union's foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, announced on Wednesday the imposition of new sanctions on 19 Iranian officials and entities.
Regarding the reasons for the sanctions, she pointed to "serious human rights violations" in the wake of bloody suppression of protests in Iran in January.
Kallas said "As the war with Iran continues, the European Union will protect its interests and will pursue those responsible for domestic repression," announcing measures approved by the EU member states.
She emphasized that the sanctions "send a message to Tehran that the future of Iran cannot be built on repression."
According to a diplomatic source, the new sanctions do not include the new Supreme Leader of Iran, Mojtaba Khamenei, who was selected to succeed his father Ali Khamenei after he was killed in a US-Israeli attack on Iran on February 28, on the first day of the war.
The same source added that these new sanctions are not directly associated with the war in the Middle East, but with repression in Iran.
Before this announcement, the European Union had imposed sanctions on about 247 individuals and 50 entities based on human rights violations.
These sanctions include measures such as asset freezes within the European Union and travel bans to its countries.
