Khaberni - The number of refugees and asylum seekers registered in Jordan has decreased to about 427,000 by February 2026, compared to about 437,000 by the end of January, which is a decrease of 2.3%, according to data from the UN Refugee Agency.
The data indicate that Syrian refugees continue to constitute the overwhelming majority of those registered with the Refugee Commission, accounting for 403,548 refugees, or 94.5% of the total refugee population, followed by Iraqis with 12,309 refugees, or 2.9%, then Yemenis with 6,089 refugees, or 1.4%, and Sudanese with 4,270 refugees, or 1%. The number of Somali refugees reached 322, in addition to 393 refugees of other nationalities.
Of these, 343,703 refugees, or 80.5%, live in urban areas within Jordanian cities and towns, compared to 83,228 refugees, or 19.5%, who reside in camps.
Refugees are distributed across the camps, with 49,596 refugees in the Zaatari camp and 33,475 refugees in the Azraq camp, according to the UN Refugee Agency data.
Half of the Refugees are Children
Children make up about half of the refugees in Jordan, numbering 209,467 children, which represents 49.06%, compared to 199,485 adults, accounting for 46.73% of the total number of refugees.
The number of male children is 107,299, representing 25.13%, compared to 102,168 female children, representing 23.93%. The number of females is 103,034 women, representing 24.13%, compared to 96,451 men, representing 22.59%.
The data shows that the registered refugees are concentrated in the capital Amman, with 147,038 refugees, followed by the Irbid governorate with 71,939 refugees, then Mafraq with 52,803 refugees, and in Zarqa 26,465 refugees, followed by Balqa with 11,735 refugees, then Madaba with 8,781 refugees, in Ma'an with 6,964 refugees, in Karak with 5,487 refugees, in Jerash with 4,850 refugees, in Aqaba with 3,252 refugees, and in Ajloun with 3,079 refugees, and in Tafilah with 1,081 refugees, in addition to 229 refugees in other areas.
Voluntary Return
Regarding the voluntary return of Syrian refugees from Jordan to Syria, the number of returnees exceeded 185,000 refugees during the period from December 8, 2024, to mid-February 2026, at a time when the UN Refugee Agency notes a decrease in the return rates since the beginning of Ramadan.
The Agency pointed out that in the period from February 22 to 28, more than 350 registered refugees returned from Jordan to Syria, representing a significant decrease of nearly 65% compared to the week before, which saw the return of 1,000 refugees.
