Possible Causes of Nighttime Muscle Cramps

Khaberni - Dr. Svetlana Alexandrova, a neurology specialist, reported that leg cramps during sleep can be caused by muscle strain, dehydration, and a deficiency of either magnesium or calcium.
She says: "Nighttime leg cramps are often functional, and are associated with muscle strain, prolonged sitting, dehydration, or an electrolyte imbalance."

The doctor indicates that cramps may be a sign of a deficiency in magnesium, potassium, calcium, reduced blood flow, varicose veins, or peripheral neuropathy.

According to her, cramps can sometimes occur in pregnant women or people with endocrine disorders.
She says: "If these episodes are rare and short-lived, it is usually normal, but if the cramps are frequent or last a long time or are accompanied by pain, a medical examination should be conducted."

Neurologist Yelena Miroshnik also points out that magnesium is involved in more than 300 vital biochemical reactions in the body and is essential for the metabolic process of energy.
