Khaberni - A study conducted by the French Institute of Sleep and Alertness revealed the effectiveness of melatonin in treating insomnia, with an increase in people's suffering from sleep disorders, many turn to melatonin supplements as a natural solution that helps to fall asleep quickly and restore night rest.
The French newspaper "La Dépêche" reported that about one in five people in France suffer from insomnia, according to the French Institute of Sleep and Alertness, which explains the widespread use of dietary supplements containing the hormone melatonin, often marketed as a natural way to regain peaceful sleep.
What is melatonin?
Melatonin is a hormone naturally secreted by the body through the pineal gland located in the center of the brain. This hormone plays a crucial role in regulating what is known as the biological rhythm or the body's internal clock, which controls the alternation of periods of wakefulness and sleep.
Melatonin secretion usually increases at the end of the day as the light dims, which sends a signal to the body that it is time to sleep.
It can also be found in small amounts in some foods such as nuts, grains, and certain vegetables.
Is melatonin really effective?
Scientific studies suggest that melatonin may be beneficial only in specific cases; it particularly helps in reducing symptoms of jet lag, and reorganizing the sleep-wake rhythm for some people, such as those working night shifts or frequent travelers.
Dr. Philippe Catala stated that its effectiveness varies from one person to another, explaining that: its use may be beneficial in some cases, such as recovering from the effects of long travel, but it depends on the nature of the problem for each patient.
Nevertheless, doctors emphasize that melatonin is not a magical solution for all sleep disorders. In pharmacies, it is typically sold in low doses, while a doctor may prescribe higher doses when needed.
However, if sleep problems persist, experts recommend consulting a physician or sleep disorder specialist rather than relying solely on supplements.
Does melatonin have side effects?
Although it is marketed as a natural product, melatonin may cause some side effects for some people, such as headaches, dizziness, nausea, and drowsiness during the day.
The French National Agency for Food, Environmental, and Occupational Health and Safety has warned against the use of melatonin for those engaged in activities that require alertness and high concentration, as drowsiness could pose a risk to their safety.
In addition, melatonin may interact with certain medications, such as anticoagulants, antidepressants, and high blood pressure medications, which is why doctors always recommend consulting a health specialist before using it regularly.
