Jordan Post Delays on Private Ecommerce Shipments

Khaberni - The General Manager of Jordan Post, Hanadi Al-Tayeb, stated that the postal parcels arriving in Jordan are categorized into parcels that arrive through the global postal network, and these have no delays and move smoothly and on schedule, while delays occur on e-commerce shipments that arrive through private courier companies.

Al-Tayeb explained on Tuesday to "Al-Mamlaka" channel that relevant authorities have established an emergency plan to address this delay, where coordination has been made with the Customs Department with high readiness to redirect e-commerce shipments through land and sea ports, indicating that these shipments have indeed been redirected through land ports.

In response to a question about the reason for redirecting the shipments to land transportation and the mechanism of these parcels' arrival, Al-Tayeb clarified that e-commerce shipments or postal parcels that arrive via the global postal network with Jordan Post usually arrive through Queen Alia International Airport, confirming that there are no delays in their sending or receiving.

She added that other e-commerce shipments arrive through airlines affiliated with private shipping companies according to the sending country, noting that the movement of these shipments is linked to the air traffic in those countries.

She explained that the parcels usually reached a logistic center in Dubai, and then were shipped to Jordan via accredited airlines, however, this procedure has been currently shifted from air to land transport.

Regarding whether maritime shipping has been used at this stage, Al-Tayeb confirmed that maritime shipping has not been used so far and that transportation is currently carried out by land, pointing out that coordination has been made with the Jordanian Logistics Guild represented by land, sea, and air shipping brokers, and that the relevant authorities are ready to deal with any circumstances that may require using these options.

In regards to the expected volume of e-commerce shipments during the upcoming period, she stated that the volume of parcels varies from month to month, and generally depends on seasons associated with a rise in demand for online shopping, explaining that the current period is seeing an expected increase in parcel volume as the Eid al-Fitr season approaches compared to ordinary times.

She pointed out that the issue of importing the shipments has been resolved in coordination with the Customs Department, with high readiness to receive them through land ports, while at the same time confirming that postal parcels and postal correspondence and e-commerce parcels that arrive through the Universal Postal Union or the global postal network enter the kingdom easily and without any delays, as they essentially arrive through Queen Alia International Airport.

In response to a question about the potential increase in work hours to deliver parcels before Eid al-Fitr, Al-Tayeb clarified that the centralized e-commerce logistics center for express transport is operating with high readiness to receive a large number of shipments of various weights, confirming that the center operates around the clock.

She added that the work at the center is conducted by specialized staff from the Customs Department, in addition to logistics sector staff in Jordan Post, to carry out handling operations, clearance, and delivery of goods in cooperation with related companies.

Regarding the impact of the shipping route change from air to land or sea on shipping prices, Al-Tayeb confirmed that so far, there has been no impact on the prices of postal parcels or the shipping prices of e-commerce parcels, explaining that most of these shipments are prepaid and cleared through the place of residence.

Al-Tayeb added that land transportation usually costs less than air transportation, as does maritime transportation, but the current prices have not witnessed any increase so far.
