Daily Dietary Supplement May Slow Your Biological Aging

Khaberni - A recent study showed that taking a daily dietary supplement of  multivitamins and minerals (MVM) may help slow the biological aging process in the elderly. The study was conducted in the United States as part of the COSMOS trial on about 1,000 participants with an average age of 70 years, lasting two years.

According to researchers from Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School, participants who took multivitamins showed a significant slowdown in two biological aging markers: PCPhenoAge and PCGrimAge.

The first clock showed an annual decrease of 0.214 years, while the second showed an annual decrease of 0.113 years. The researchers indicated that these changes may correspond to a reduced cancer risk of between 3 to 7 percent over 10 years.

One of the notable findings was that individuals who had higher rates of aging acceleration before the trial benefited more from the supplements, as their aging rate slowed by nearly twice that of the group with normal aging. Improvements were also observed in inflammation markers and brain functions, suggesting that the supplements could compensate for some nutritional deficiencies and improve overall health.

While supplements derived from cocoa flavanols (500 mg daily) showed no clear effect on any of the five aging markers assessed, despite previous results showing other health benefits.

The researchers pointed out that the study is an important step in understanding the role of dietary supplements in improving life quality and extending physical health, but they recommend conducting longer and larger trials to confirm these clinical results over the long term.

Experts also emphasized the importance of continuing research to identify simple and safe interventions that may contribute to slowing biological aging and improving the quality of life for the elderly, while considering individual differences in nutrition and health conditions.
