Khaberni - Researchers from Burapha University in Thailand suggest that fermented dairy products, which are rich in probiotic bacteria, might have a positive impact on bone health.
The journal Frontiers in Nutrition reports that researchers arrived at this conclusion after studying the effect of fermented dairy products on bone regeneration and mineral density.
The experimental study involved 40 women aged between 20 and 40 years. For 12 weeks, one of the groups consumed yogurt containing Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus daily, while the other group consumed regular milk, noting that both products contain the same amount of calcium, approximately 400 milligrams per day.
At the end of the experiment, researchers observed increased blood calcium levels in participants who consumed fermented dairy products. They also noticed a decrease in some bone turnover markers and an increase in mineral density in specific areas of the skeleton, such as the arms, legs, and pelvis.
The scientists explained that probiotic bacteria can improve calcium absorption and affect bone metabolism through gut bacteria, primarily found in yogurt, and might also be present in other fermented dairy products, such as kefir.
The researchers note that to confirm these results, it is necessary to conduct further studies involving a larger group of participants.
