After embracing Islam, he changed his name to Abdul-Salam Bilal, which became apparent after living some time in the United Arab Emirates where he officially declared his Islam.

Anelka said his conversion to Islam did not significantly change his lifestyle in terms of appearance, but it gave him a spiritual and ethical value, and he added that he was influenced by Islam and its worship practices, especially fasting.
