What happens before the 2026 World Cup A booking crisis in the World Cup capital

Khaberni - FIFA canceled about 40% of its bookings in Mexico City hotels in preparation for the 2026 World Cup, less than 100 days before the competitions begin in the upcoming June.
According to Alberto Albaran Leiva, the general manager of the Mexico City Hotel Association, about 800 rooms out of approximately 2000 that had been previously booked in several hotels, were canceled, and in some cases entire bookings were canceled without an official explanation from FIFA regarding the reasons.

Albaran pointed out that these cancellations exceed the number of new bookings registered so far, despite the approaching date of the tournament, which has prompted the hotel sector to reconsider its marketing and sales strategies to attract visitors and accommodate the available rooms.

Mexico City has more than 63,000 rooms spread across about 800 hotels, yet the current occupancy rate remains low compared to expectations for the World Cup season, reflecting challenges for the tourism sector ahead of the major event.
