US Army Announces Killing of Iranian Official Planned to Assassinate Trump

Khaberni - The U.S. military announced today, Wednesday, that it killed an Iranian official who headed a unit behind an alleged assassination attempt on President Donald Trump.

U.S. War Secretary Pete Hegseth said at a press conference, "We tracked down the leader of a unit that attempted to assassinate President Trump and killed him. Iran tried to kill President Trump, but President Trump had the last word."

Hegseth did not mention the name of the Iranian official who was announced to have been killed, saying only that "the operation took place yesterday, Tuesday."

Trump recently stated to ABC News that the United States "struck" Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei "before he could strike me."

The U.S. Department of Justice previously claimed that "a man was tasked in 2024 with carrying out the Iranian conspiracy to assassinate Trump," and mentioned that "the Iranian Revolutionary Guard ordered it to assassinate Trump, who was the elected president at the time before taking office at the beginning of last year."

Neither of the other two attempts that targeted Trump—in Butler, Pennsylvania, and at his golf course in Florida—were linked to Iran.

Alex Eisenstadt from Axios reported that the Iranian threat to Trump prompted his team to take extraordinary precautions, including the use of a decoy plane.

In 2022, the U.S. Department of Justice also spoke of charges related to an alleged Iranian conspiracy to assassinate John Bolton, the former National Security Advisor to Trump, and the driving force behind the "maximum pressure" campaign on Iran.

It should be noted that Iran previously denied American allegations of involvement in an assassination attempt on Trump. In November 2024, the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that "accusations of Tehran seeking to assassinate current and former U.S. officials are untrue, proven to be false."

The Iranian Foreign Ministry added at the time that "repeating the accusation is a conspiracy by the Zionist entity and Iran's enemies to complicate matters between Washington and Tehran." The ministry affirmed that Tehran would use all legitimate and legal means at the domestic and international levels to claim its rights.
