Greater Amman Municipality launches pilot phase of organic waste sorting at the vegetable market

Khaberni  -   The Greater Amman Municipality, through the Department of Environmental Studies, launched the initial operational pilot phase for the project of sorting organic waste from the source at the vegetable market in the Ras Al-Ain area, affiliated with the Municipality, as part of the activities of the solid waste management project
in Jordan “SOWAS”, funded by the German government and the European Union and implemented by the German Agency for International Cooperation GIZ as part of its efforts to enhance integrated waste management and activate resource utilization pathways.

The project targets the sorting of organic waste generated from market activities and diverting it from landfill to processing and utilization, thereby reducing the amounts delivered to dumps, decreasing environmental impacts and emissions, and transforming it into a resource used in the production of organic fertilizer according to best environmental practices.

The Director of the Department of Environmental Studies, Engineer Basem Al-Hawamdeh, confirmed that before launching the operational pilot phase, intensive awareness and educational campaigns targeting traders and workers inside the market were executed to explain the sorting mechanisms, the project's goals, and its environmental and economic impact. Subsequent follow-up campaigns were also carried out to enhance the awareness messages, ensure their clarity, and achieve the required response, supporting the achievement of the targeted results within the approved performance indicators.

He indicated that the pilot phase will be dedicated to measuring the operational efficiency, compliance rates, and quality of outputs, and addressing any field challenges immediately, paving the way for gradual expansion in other markets affiliated with the Municipality, following the same model and approved design.
