Excellence is not linked to intelligence or talent Psychology explains

Khaberni - Some individuals achieve stunning accomplishments and a record full of success, while others do not even come close to achieving their dreams. According to a report published by the Upworthy site, this is not linked to talent, luck, or intelligence.

According to psychologist Angela Duckworth, the most important factor in excellence is the ability to get back up after each setback. Duckworth calls this trait "grit", and according to her research, it is the common denominator among top performers in various fields, whether they are students at the West Point Military Academy or children in spelling competitions. Duckworth discusses this topic in detail in her book "Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance".

The blend of passion and perseverance
Duckworth revealed that "the common factor among top performers, regardless of their field of achievement, is this unique mix of passion and perseverance for long-term goals. In short, it is grit."

Grit and hard work
She added: "This is partly due to hard work, partly due to practicing what you still can't do, and partly due to resilience. So, part of perseverance is, on tough days, does one rise again? If one combines passion and perseverance to achieve long-term goals, they will possess this trait which is the common denominator among top performers in every field."

A clear goal
When asked to specify the exact meaning of perseverance, Duckworth replied: "It comprises two elements; passion for long-term goals, and not getting distracted and moving from one thing to another, then another, then another, but rather having a clear goal."

Great achievements
For anyone wishing to achieve great accomplishments in life, perseverance is a trait one can develop themselves, and does not depend on innate abilities or level of education. While these are important indeed, possessing the spirit of perseverance is something that can be learned.

Genetic traits
Duckworth stated that she does not deny the role of genes, "any psychologist will affirm that they are part of everything, including perseverance", explaining that "the level of perseverance, certainly, depends on what one knows, who surrounds them, and the places they frequent".

The importance of perseverance
Perseverance is essential for achieving remarkable success because it means continuing with the task even when facing obstacles. In every journey to transform an idea one loves into reality, one will encounter what is known as the dark swamp of despair, a place that must be crossed to reach safety. It requires determination and persistence to overcome times when failure is feared. If it were easy, everyone would be successful.

Examples of strong determination
Determination is what drives teenagers to practice in their rooms every night, making them skilled guitar players. Determination is what makes a basketball player the first to enter the gym and the last to leave, ensuring their spot in the starting lineup. And determination is for one to knock on the next door after twelve people have shut their doors in their face.

Neither intelligence nor innate talent
What is wonderful about Duckworth's work is that it allows everyone who is willing to put in the effort; it’s no longer possible to excuse one for not having specialized intelligence or innate talent. All one needs is perseverance and passion, and they will have an opportunity just like anyone else to achieve their dreams.
