Reuters Lebanons leaders intend to postpone the parliamentary elections scheduled for May

Khaberni - Two high-ranking Lebanese officials said that Lebanon's leaders intend to postpone the parliamentary elections scheduled for May, and extend the term of the parliament for two more years, following the renewed war between Israel and Hezbollah this week amid escalating tensions in the Middle East.

The officials clarified that the Lebanese President, the Prime Minister, and the Speaker of the Parliament agreed on this step on Tuesday.

The matter still requires the approval of the majority of the 128 members of the Lebanese Parliament.

Since Saturday, Israel and the United States have been carrying out airstrikes on Iran, which resulted in the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei; since then, Tehran has responded by striking Israel and other countries in the region with missiles and drones.

Iran has implemented a naval blockade on the passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz, targeting oil tankers attempting to cross.

On Sunday, Hezbollah launched several missiles from Lebanon targeting northern Israel; in response to the assassination of Khamenei, dragging Lebanon into an open war with Israel, where it carried out devastating raids on southern Lebanon and the southern suburbs of Beirut.
