Khaberni - The American President Donald Trump said on Sunday evening that he preemptively targeted the Iranian leadership before the Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei could carry out a new assassination attempt, affirming that Tehran had tried to kill him twice before.
In an interview with ABC News, Trump stated: "I got to him before he could get to me. They tried twice, but I was ahead of him."
Trump's statements come amid escalating U.S. military operations against Iran, and renewed scrutiny over what Washington describes as Iranian attempts to target him during the 2024 presidential election campaign.
In 2024, the U.S. Attorney’s Office charged several individuals in connection with alleged assassination plots linked to Iran targeting Trump when he was a presidential candidate.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, elements associated with the Iranian Revolutionary Guard sought to recruit individuals within the United States to carry out attacks, said to be in response to the U.S. airstrike in 2020 that killed Iranian General Qasem Soleimani.
