Killing of 5 Worshippers in an Attack on a Mosque During Tarawih Prayers in Nigeria

Khaberni - Nasser Idris, the Governor of Kebbi State in Nigeria, pledged to intensify security operations to apprehend those responsible for a terrorist attack that targeted a mosque during Tarawih prayers on Wednesday evening, resulting in the death of 5 people and injuring others.

Circulated footage showed Idris inspecting the site of the incident in Dadin Kowa town in the Mayama district of northwestern Nigeria, along with ceremonies for the funeral and burial of the victims.

The governor described the attack as "barbaric," noting that it targeted peaceful citizens "in a moment of worship during the blessed month of Ramadan," as the assault occurred during the Tarawih prayers and a Quran interpretation session.

Meanwhile, Bashir Usman, the spokesperson for the Kebbi State Police, said that the attack was retaliatory according to preliminary investigations, confirming the deployment of joint forces to restore security in the village, as reported by local media.

On the other hand, Amnesty International sharply criticized the federal government of Nigeria, affirming that the authorities' neglect has led to a state of terror and mass displacement in the region.

The organization pointed out that the Nigerian President Bola Tinubu's promises to end the security chaos have not yet been realized, as attacks on civilians inside places of worship continue.

Multiple Attacks

In related news, at least 25 people were killed in two separate attacks carried out by gunmen in Adamawa State in northeastern Nigeria.

The attacks took place in the towns of Madagali and Hong on the border with Cameroon, attributed to the "Boko Haram" movement, whose fighters have been active in the region since 2009.

A local Madagali government official about the attack that occurred on Tuesday evening said, "Gunmen - believed to be from Boko Haram - rode into the market on several motorcycles, opened fire on people and killed 21," while 4 others including 3 soldiers were killed in the neighboring town of Hong.

Since 2009, ongoing attacks in Nigeria have resulted in the deaths of more than 40,000 people and displaced two million in the northeast, according to the United Nations. These attacks are primarily led by the Boko Haram group on one hand, and the Islamic State in West Africa on the other.
