Khaberni - The General Iftaa' Department has warned against relying on artificial intelligence technologies and social media sites as references for issuing fatwas, stressing that these tools are not suitable substitutes for specialists such as scholars and muftis.
The department clarified in a fatwa about the ruling on using artificial intelligence technology in issuing fatwas, that artificial intelligence technologies rely on gathering available information on fatwa sites without precise discrimination between what is correct and what is not, and may sometimes include references or information that is not accurate, which exposes users to making mistakes.
It pointed out that these programs are unable to perceive the conditions and personal circumstances of the requester, which is a crucial aspect in the fatwa process; as the mufti depends on asking questions and inquiries to understand the circumstances surrounding the issue before issuing the appropriate Sharia ruling, noting that fatwas differ according to different situations and people.
It mentioned that it's permissible for experts and Islamic researchers to use artificial intelligence technologies, but it's essential to refer back to trusted scholars to derive fatwas from their authentic and reliable sources.
