Khaberni - In an unusual scene that no one could have imagined, the poor man with the worn-out features, who begs passersby in broad daylight, is the same elegant person who drives a luxury car as evening falls, until he was caught by the Dubai police.
Brigadier Ali Al Shamsi, Director of the Criminal Investigation Department at Dubai Police, said on the sidelines of a press conference that the beggar who was apprehended after being tracked by work teams does not own just one vehicle, but three luxury cars, accumulating their price in addition to a small fortune from begging after turning people's sympathy into a business, and mercy into a source of illegitimate profit.
Al Shamsi revealed that the accused is of Asian nationality and confessed that he amassed his fortune from begging, using carefully devised methods to manipulate the feelings of benevolent individuals, through invented stories and meticulously designed human details, and a daily performance no less professional than any organized activity aimed at profit.
He explained that the accused carefully chose locations, and relied on an appearance that suggested dire need, then later changed his appearance and left in a luxury car, in a scenario that reflects the extent of exploitation practiced by certain groups against the values of solidarity in the society.
It should be noted that Dubai Police caught another beggar with 20,000 dirhams in a car park, as part of the "Fight Begging" campaign launched in cooperation with strategic partners to raise awareness of the importance of maintaining the civilized image of the country through combating the crime of begging, and preventing it.
Brigadier Ali Salem Al Shamsi explained that the beggar targeted owners of luxury cars at car parks or traffic lights to beg for their mercy, claiming that he was in dire circumstances and did not have enough for his daily sustenance.
He also warned the community members against sympathizing with beggars and giving them money, or believing their methods aimed at appealing to people to gain material and tangible benefits, using fabricated stories and tricks.
