Severe Beating and Deliberate Neglect a Worrying Increase in the Number of Sick Prisoners in Ofer Prison

Khaberni  - The Palestinian Prisoners Club reported that the Israeli prison "Ofer" - west of Ramallah – is witnessing a noticeable increase in the number of sick prisoners, attributing this to harsh detention conditions, ongoing physical assaults, and the deliberate deprivation of medical care.

The club clarified - in a briefing based on a series of visits conducted to the prisoners during January/February 2026 - that the detainees are facing a serious exacerbation in their health conditions, as a result of being deprived of necessary treatment and an escalation in the intensity of abuse.

Horrendous Testimonies from Behind Bars

The human rights report documented specific cases that highlight the severity of medical neglect and systematic assaults, most notably:

Prisoner (M. Y): Suffered from a back fracture before arrest, and was severely beaten during the arrest which led to a broken nose without receiving any treatment. The prisoner has lost a significant amount of weight due to ongoing hunger and suffers from severe pain affecting his ability to sleep.
Prisoner (B. J): Suffers from diabetes, blood platelet issues, and severe clots in the arteries of the liver, small intestine, and stomach, and urgently needs medical follow-up. The prisoner was beaten upon entry to prison, leading to the loss of his dentures without any alternative or treatment provided.
Prisoner (D. N): Was injured by gunshots in his right hand, abdomen, and pelvis during arrests in 2024, and currently suffers from severe pain, difficulty walking, and problems with excretion after losing bladder functions, and has been officially informed that there is no treatment available for his condition at this time.
Prisoner (A. A): Completely lost hearing in his left ear as a result of being subjected to a group assault in the prison.

A Systematic Policy

The Prisoners Club emphasized that these cases are not isolated incidents but reflect a health situation of extreme severity faced by prisoners in "Ofer" prison and various Israeli prisons, under a continuous and systematic policy of medical neglect.

According to official Palestinian data, there are more than 9,300 prisoners in Israeli prisons, including 66 women and 350 children, living in exceptional conditions of oppression.

This deterioration within the prisons coincides with ongoing Israeli military escalation in the occupied West Bank since the start of the genocide war on the Gaza Strip on October 8, 2023.

This escalation - according to official data - has resulted in the death of no fewer than 1,117 Palestinians, and injuries to about 11,500 others, in addition to approximately 22,000 arrest cases.
