Jordan to Host HighLevel Conference on Humanity in War

Khaberni - The Permanent Representative of Jordan to the United Nations in Geneva, Ambassador Akram Harahsheh, affirmed Jordan's clear commitment to human rights values, based on a deep-rooted path relying on an ambitious leadership vision, enforceable legislations, and capable institutions that prioritize humans at the center of their policies and methodology.

He added, during his statement at the 61st session of the Human Rights Council on Wednesday in Geneva, that Jordan is committed to the principles of multilateral action, dialogue, and listening to viewpoints to build a better future.

Harahsheh emphasized Jordan's support for the United Nations Secretary-General's UN80 initiative, confirming that its outcomes must provide real solutions that address the financial crisis, boost the efficiency and effectiveness of the organization, and simultaneously respond to the aspirations of youth, the largest demographic in populations, and the challenges of new technologies and artificial intelligence.

He welcomed the efforts of the High Commissioner for Human Rights to launch a global alliance for human rights, expressing Jordan's willingness to work jointly with him and his office on this matter.

In the context of Jordan's commitment to its mediating role and desire to enhance multilateral action, Harahsheh announced that Jordan has nominated itself for membership in the Human Rights Council for the period 2027–2029, with elections to be held during the eighty-first session of the United Nations General Assembly next October.

He affirmed that Jordan will work through its membership to promote efforts linked to increasing the effectiveness of the Council and its tools, looking forward to the support of member states for this candidacy.

Harahsheh indicated that the world is facing serious challenges today that cannot be addressed without activating the tools of multilateral action, emphasizing the pivotal role of the Human Rights Council in ensuring respect for rights and freedoms.

In response to humanitarian challenges, he announced that Jordan will host a high-level conference on humanity in war at the end of this year, as a result of an initiative launched by his country along with Brazil, South Africa, China, France, and Kazakhstan, in addition to the International Committee of the Red Cross.

Harahsheh affirmed that human dignity must remain at the core of international efforts, everywhere and under all circumstances, and that human rights are not selective or conditional, but universal and indivisible.

He stated that the mandate of the Human Rights Council revolves around the universality of human rights for every person everywhere, noting that the Council serves as a platform for international dialogue and cooperation, and emphasizes the importance of continuing to work in a spirit of partnership to enhance its impact and status.

He added that, with twenty years since the establishment of the Council, many achievements in the fields of documentation and capacity building are commemorated, which would not have been possible without the Council's exercise of its tools and powers.
