Khaberni - Many believe that brushing teeth after every meal is the best way to maintain oral health. Although this habit has clear benefits, experts warn that it may entail some risks.
Dentist Madina Abanasova clarifies whether brushing teeth after every meal is necessary.
She explained that the benefits of brushing teeth after meals include feeling refreshed and clean, and getting rid of bad odors from food residues. It also reduces food particles, decreasing bacterial activity, which lowers the risk of decay and gum inflammation, and prevents the buildup of soft tartar that can eventually harden.
However, the dentist warned against excessive brushing, as repeated cleaning can damage the gums, including irritation and bleeding. Also, brushing teeth immediately after consuming acidic foods or beverages may increase tooth sensitivity, because acids temporarily soften tooth enamel, and direct mechanical friction can gradually erode it.
She added that if it is not possible to brush teeth after meals, rinsing with water or using mouthwash can substitute, as it helps remove most food residues and reduce bad breath.
She concluded by saying: "The frequency of teeth cleaning should be appropriate for each individual, taking into account the condition of the tooth enamel and gums, and adhering to the dentist's recommendations to maintain oral health without risks".
