After installing 550 of them Amman Municipality Actual work begins with smart cameras

Khaberni  - Shadi Al-Rawabdeh, the Traffic Operations Manager at Amman Municipality, confirmed on Tuesday that the municipality has started the actual operation with smart cameras, having installed 550 of them so far on the main routes and streets of the capital, with the number increasing. By the end of this year, a total of 5500 cameras are expected to be installed.

Al-Rawabdeh said that the installation of smart cameras covers all principal arterial roads within the boundaries of the Municipality, and their main purpose is to monitor traffic movement, according to Al Mamlaka.

He added that managing traffic operations is a joint process between the staff of Amman Municipality and the Traffic Department, pointing out that 80% of these cameras aim to monitor traffic movement and reduce response time in case of malfunctions or accidents on main roads and highways.

He noted that 20% of the smart cameras are intended to control infractions and limit violations on the roads, explaining that there is now reliance on artificial intelligence and specialized cameras for detecting violations and infractions.

Al-Rawabdeh explained that indicators show a decrease in the number of fatalities, injuries, and accidents since the amendment of the traffic law and the increase in penalties and control of violations.

He stated that these cameras detect all types of violations, mentioning that the focus will be on major violations such as exceeding the speed limit, running red lights, using the phone while driving, not wearing seat belts, changing lanes abruptly, and stopping or parking in unauthorized places, in addition to environmental violations.
