Khaberni - A French court has sentenced a former player to imprisonment after he assaulted a policewoman who intervened to break up a brawl that occurred in the city of Rennes last Saturday.
The French newspaper "Ouest France" mentioned that the player, a graduate of the Stade Rennais Academy whose name was not mentioned, appeared before the court in an urgent immediate session yesterday, after causing injuries to a policewoman during a brawl that occurred two days before the mentioned date.
The police brought the 40-year-old player to the Rennes judicial court, which sentenced him to 6 months of actual imprisonment with judicial supervision, as the punishment will be served through an "electronic bracelet". This means he will not actually enter prison but will remain at home and comply with the terms of supervision set by the court, in addition to another 6 months suspended.
The incident began when a policewoman received a report from a security guard at a shop in Rennes, about a brawl that broke out around three in the morning, and after she arrived at the location, the brawl initially calmed down before tensions escalated again leading to the assault.
The policewoman suffered a broken nose, while one of her colleagues was also injured due to the assault carried out by the player who was under the influence of alcohol, according to the same newspaper.
In front of the court, the player did not deny the charges against him although he mentioned that he does not remember them.
The player, who has a clean record, apologized to the policewoman, according to the newspaper, and said: "I apologize from the bottom of my heart, I did not intend to hurt you in any way, I feel ashamed of what I did."
