Peace Council Considers Launching Digital Currency for Gaza

Khaberni - The "Financial Times" reported on Monday that the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump is in discussions with the "Peace Council" and the Gaza Management Committee about the possibility of launching a stable digital currency backed by the dollar as part of a plan to rebuild the economy in the Gaza Strip.

The newspaper explained, citing informed sources, that the plan is still in its initial stages, and that no new Palestinian currency will be issued, but the stable digital currency would serve as an electronic payment mechanism after the banking system was damaged, and access to the shekel has declined since the war began in October 2023.

The sources added that the "Peace Council" and the Gaza Management Committee will make the decisions regarding the regulatory framework for the digital currency.

This proposal is part of a broader vision for the future of Gaza, against the backdrop of an economic collapse caused by the ongoing war for two years, and the disruption of the banking system and traditional payment methods.

According to the newspaper, the plan is led by Israeli businessman Liran Tankman, an advisor at the body led by the United States that oversees the reconstruction of Gaza.
The newspaper noted that officials from the Gaza Management Committee are involved in this project, and it is expected that the digital currency will be linked to the U.S. dollar, with support from digital asset companies.
