The Mufti of Saudi Arabia Clarifies on the Permissibility of Breaking the Fast

Khaberni - The Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia, Dr. Saleh bin Fozan Al-Fozan, confirmed that those who are permitted to break their fast during Ramadan are people with legitimate excuses, which include: travelers undertaking journeys that allow shortening of prayers covering 80 kilometers or more, and the sick whose illness would either worsen by fasting or delay recovery.

He added that menstruating women and those in postpartum cannot fast during menstruation and postpartum periods, and it's forbidden for them to fast. Pregnant and breastfeeding women are also permitted to break their fast if they fear for their own health or their child's health. Someone who is terminally ill and not expected to recover, and the elderly who are too frail are also mentioned. He clarified that travelers, individuals with a potentially curable illness, menstruating women, those in postpartum, pregnant and breastfeeding women—all these individuals must make up the missed fasts later according to the saying of the Almighty (interpretation of the meaning): (a number of other days), whereas those who cannot make up their fasts on a permanent basis, like the very elderly and chronically ill, are not required to do so; instead, they should feed a poor person for each day missed, according to the saying of the Almighty: (but on those who are able [to fast, but with hardship], a ransom [as substitute] of feeding a poor person).
