Article by the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Middle East University Dr Yaqoub Nasser AlDin Nature and Role

In a regional and international reality of this confused and unstable type, apt to flare up at any moment, it naturally becomes necessary to assess our country's capabilities in dealing with these risks and challenges. We are of course aware of the transformations occurring in the region and the complex interactions resulting from the reshaping of the Middle East, along with the collapse of the global order established since the end of World War II.
Jordan has always been a pivotal point amid all the wars and crises that the region has faced over the course of a century, maintaining its existence, status, and role according to standards governing pivotal roles from several perspectives and definitions—both debatable and redefinable—whether regarding security dimensions, geopolitics, regional and international alliances, or the socioeconomic realities, and from this standpoint, the prevailing understanding of the pivotal role cannot be relied upon without considering the nature of the state as an entry point for understanding its position in both regional and global balances!
From the bitter experiences that this region has gone through, and in the continuous absence of even minimal national solidarity, Jordan has maintained its national allegiance as a strategic choice exercised by His Majesty the King through communication and coordination with the majority of Arab leaders, and world leaders concerning national issues, with the Palestinian issue at the forefront representing a relationship always described as one of shared goal and destiny for Jordan.
Again, it is essential to delve into understanding the nature of the Jordanian state which is based on a system of values, principles, and high ideals that have always decisively determined its position by relying on and adhering to them. To bring closer to clarity the meanings of commitment to state values as an element of its nature, the principle of non-interference in the affairs of other states and their choices is not just a specific foreign policy method, but also a characteristic of a state capable of defining its role, stature, and influence in its regional environment and consequently its international one!
Jordan has never been a part of any conflict or internal affair of other Arab states except from the angle of facilitating dialogue, sending aid to conflict victims, and hosting refugees fleeing from the horrors of strife and conflict, most of which have resulted from the state of relations deteriorating between their people and their leaders, and from poor judgments that led to bullying neighboring states to the extent of direct occupation under various pretexts, and worst of all, forming alliances that contradict the simplest rules of national and shared national security interests.
It is vitally important for political analysts and journalists, among others who speak on this topic, to understand that the reality of the region is not necessarily the reality of Jordan, although it is directly and indirectly on the front line of all its crises. All countries of the region and indeed all countries in the world are involved in reassessing their pivotal roles in shaping a new global order, and we do not know how long the world needs to bury its outdated system, nor the time it needed to build a new one, and therefore our diligent pursuit of economic reform during a major global crisis and our continued path to democracy and comprehensive reform is a steadfast national project for a state that takes pride in its nature, trusts itself, knows its options, and has the ability to assess the situation and foresee the future with sufficient clarity!.
