Baghdad Kuwait deposited its maps without consulting Iraq

Khaberni - Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein stated that Kuwait has deposited its maps at the United Nations in 2014 without consulting with Iraq, calling for the border dispute to be resolved legally and through dialogue.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Iraq Fuad Hussein affirmed, during a telephone call with Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi, that the existing border dispute with Kuwait stems from the Kuwaiti government's action to deposit its marine maps and baseline at the United Nations in 2014 without consulting Baghdad, while the Iraqi government did not submit its map until recently, emphasizing the necessity to address the issue through legal discussions based on international standards that ensure Iraq's rights while respecting UN resolutions and relevant bilateral agreements.

Recently, Baghdad deposited updated marine coordinates at the United Nations, delineating its map of the Iraqi maritime zones, which prompted Kuwait to submit an official protest claiming that these coordinates infringe upon its sovereignty over certain maritime areas and permanent water elevations, including "Fisht Al-Qid" and "Fisht Al-Eej".

An Iraqi Foreign Ministry statement pointed out that the call also covered developments related to the upcoming talks between the United States and Iran in Geneva, mediated by Oman, where Albusaidi briefed his Iraqi counterpart on the details of the new round, with both sides affirming the importance of successful negotiation to prevent military escalation in the region and enhance security and stability, while Fuad Hussein reiterated Baghdad's commitment to resolving disputes through dialogue and respecting state sovereignty and non-interference in internal affairs.
