Question About Lavish Event Held by Aqaba Development Company

Khaberni - Deputy Hassan Salah Al-Riyati posed a parliamentary question to the Prime Minister, relying on the provisions of Article (96) of the Constitution and Article (123) from the internal regulations of the House of Representatives, seeking clarifications about the expenses of the Aqaba Development Company.

The Riyati's inquiries focused on the actual reasons and economic justifications for the Aqaba Development Company hosting an event described as "massive" and "lavish," including costly preparations under the pretext of "opening the Aqaba Stadium." He pointed out that the stadium has been in use for years and queried whether changing the name or installing an electronic screen justifies this expenditure.

The deputy demanded all documents related to the tendering procedures for the catering (restaurant) of the event, statements of compliance with the government procurement law, in addition to revealing the exact total cost of the event including lighting, screens, hospitality, and public dinner, with a detailed statement of the amounts spent.

Riyati also inquired, in the context of social responsibility, about the wisdom of spending significant amounts on festive aspects amidst tough economic conditions and the presence of poverty pockets in Aqaba, considering that needy and deserving families should be prioritized through social development channels.

He concluded his inquiry by requesting clarification on the measures the Prime Minister's office takes to monitor the expenses of government-owned companies, to ensure that public funds are not wasted on activities lacking urgent necessity.
