The Jordanian Fatwa Department Clarifies the Ruling on Women Taking Menstruation Delay Pills for the Purpose of Fasting

Khaberni  - The Jordanian Fatwa Department clarified the ruling on women taking menstruation delay pills for performing Hajj, Umrah, and fasting during Ramadan, stating that it is permissible.

In response to a question received by the department about the ruling on women taking menstruation delay pills during Ramadan, the following was answered:

Praise be to Allah, peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad
It is permissible for a woman to take medication that delays menstruation, especially if there is a legitimate need for it, such as the fear of the group not waiting in Hajj and Umrah if delayed because of menstruation, and the desire to perform fasting in Ramadan before getting preoccupied with making up missed fasts, and similar reasons, provided that the medication does not cause real harm to the body that outweighs the expected benefit, and with the husband's permission.
Some jurists have previously stated the ruling on this issue:
Al-Buhuti al-Hanbali, may God have mercy on him, said: "It is permissible to drink permissible medicine to stop menstruation assuming there is no harm, and Al-Qadi said: It is not permitted without the husband's permission...and it is permissible for a woman to take permissible medicine to induce menstruation, not near Ramadan to break her fast, like traveling to break the fast" —end quote. From "Kashshaf al-Qina'" (1/218)
And Ibn Rushd, may God have mercy on him, said: "Malik was asked about a woman who fears early menstruation, and it was described to her to drink something that delays menstruation? He said: That is not correct, and he disliked it. Ibn Rushd said: He only disliked it fearing that she might bring harm upon herself by that to her body" —end quote. From "Mawahib al-Jalil" (1/538).
Nevertheless, we remind women that they are rewarded if they break their fast in Ramadan due to a legitimate excuse, as they are obeying the command of Allah Almighty. Therefore, there is no need to expose themselves to the harms of medication for a matter that Allah Almighty has decreed for the daughters of Adam, and there is no religious hardship in it. God knows best.
