Smart Shoe Helps Seniors Avoid Falls

Khaberni - He explained that this observation led him to think about the major risks that falls could pose to the elderly, especially those living alone, wondering if the semiconductor technologies he was working on could offer a practical solution to this problem.

The researcher had previously developed advanced sensors for accurately measuring lung functions, which led him to the idea of applying similar technologies to analyze walking patterns. He pointed out that accurate mapping of foot movement could reveal early fall probabilities, thus helping users safely maintain their independence within their homes.

The technology relies on an advanced electronic chip capable of reading data from 253 sensors embedded in the shoe sole simultaneously, where the data is used to create images that highlight foot pressure points and assess walking stability.

To ensure ease of use, the device operates on a low-voltage battery that consumes about 100 microwatts only, allowing it to run for approximately three months before needing recharging, and it can be linked with small devices such as mobile phones or smartwatches.

Li confirmed that preventing falls represents a significant health challenge for the elderly, noting that the ability to predict them before they occur can make a real difference in the quality of their lives. He added that his teacher was greatly impressed by the idea and expressed happiness about the possibility of manufacturing the shoe in the future to assist a large number of people.

The scientific aspects of the device are scheduled to be presented during an Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers conference in front of industry experts, in a step aimed at paving the way towards its commercial development.

The researcher noted that the design is scalable and can be produced at low cost, which may allow for the provision of a smart shoe sole that brings a qualitative shift in elderly care. He added that the next stage will include conducting extensive clinical evaluations to verify the accuracy of the device in predicting fall risk, alongside collaboration with partners from the medical and industrial sectors to transform the innovation into a widely usable product.
