Extra virgin olive oil benefits cognitive functions through its impact on gut bacteria

Extra virgin olive oil is extracted through mechanical processes while refined olive oil undergoes industrial treatments to remove impurities, which reduces antioxidants and health-beneficial compounds. Extra virgin olive oil is a key component of the Mediterranean diet due to its health benefits for the heart, blood vessels, and metabolism. In the first study on the direct impact on the brain through the digestive system and gut bacteria, scientists from several Spanish universities and institutes analyzed data from 656 individuals aged 55 to 75 who were overweight or obese and had metabolic syndrome over two years. According to a report published in the journal Microbiome, the data included the participants' consumption of various types of olive oil and the composition of their gut bacteria and any changes in their cognitive functions. The results showed that those who consumed extra virgin olive oil demonstrated greater improvement in cognitive functions and a greater diversity in their gut bacteria, indicating improved gut health and metabolism.
