Dr. Amr Khaled, the Islamic preacher, revealed three ways that help you understand, improve, and live with the Quran, and to build a deep relationship with it.
Khaled highlighted in the first episode of his Ramadan program "Guide – A Journey with the Quran" how to achieve this as follows:
The first way:
The Quran is the speech of Allah addressing His servants: "Whoever wants Allah to speak to him should pray, and whoever wants to speak to Allah should read the Quran". Therefore, you need to activate your feeling and sense that "our Lord is speaking to me". Umar Ibn Abdul Aziz used to read Al-Fatiha verse by verse, pausing between each, and when asked about his silence, he said: to enjoy my Lord's response.
Abu Huraira reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah - may peace be upon him - say: Allah the Almighty said: (I have divided prayer into two halves between Me and My servant, and My servant shall have what he asks. When the servant says: Alhamdulillah Rabbil Alameen, Allah the Almighty says: My servant has praised Me, and when he says: Ar-Rahman Ar-Raheem, Allah says: My servant has extolled Me, and when he says: Maaliki Yawm al-Deen, He says: My servant has glorified Me, and once He said: Projected to My servant. When he says: Iyyaka na'budu wa Iyyaka nasta'een, He says: This is between Me and My servant and My servant will have what he asked. When he says: Ihdena as-sirat al-mustaqeem, Sirat al-ladheena an'amta 'alayhim, ghayril maghdoobi 'alayhim wa la ad-dalleen, He says: This for My servant, and for My servant is what he asked) narrated by Muslim and the four Sunan.
The Prophet’s guidance in prayer was to invoke protection when passing by a verse of fear, ask for blessings on a verse of mercy, and glorify Allah on verses declaring His transcendence, which indicates his contemplation and interaction with the Noble Quran during his prayers and recitations.
Activating feeling when reading the Quran
Khaled offered practical training teaching you how to activate your feelings when reading Surah Al-Fatiha:
- "Alhamdulillah Rabbil Alamin" (Remember a beautiful blessing in your life).
- "Ar-Rahman Ar-Raheem" (I live by Your mercy).
- "Maaliki Yawm al-Deen" (I return to You, O Lord, on the Day of Judgement).
- "Iyyaka na'budu wa Iyyaka nasta'een" (Help me so I can worship You).
- "Ihdena as-sirat al-mustaqeem" (Show me the right path).
- "Sirat al-ladheena an'amta 'alayhim" (Grant me good companionship).
- "Ghayril maghdoobi 'alayhim wa la ad-dalleen" (Keep me away from bad influences).
The second way:
Khaled advises you to gradually level up your understanding of the Quran, and to live with it at your level of understanding, aiming to progress gradually; for the Quran is at different levels, and if not so, it would not have persisted until now. If it were one superficial level, we would have been bored by now.
And he said that this is the meaning of His verse: "And We have certainly made the Quran easy to remember, so is there any who will remember?", and this verse is mentioned four times in one surah, as the Creator made it easy for every person to feel, live, and understand the Quran at their level.
The Quran, the speech of Allah, is not difficult, as it talks about morals, God's power in the universe, the stories of the prophets, the creation of heavens and earth, the Day of Judgement, and the beautiful names of Allah.
The Eternal Refuge sought during hardships
Khaled touched on Surah Al-Ikhlas, and the meaning of the word As-Samad in it, saying: The Samad is the one to whom people resort in times of hardship, it is intended to fulfill needs. The Arabs say a frequented house if its door is often knocked by people with needs, and the meaning of Samad signifies that worshippers stand at His door hoping He fulfills their needs, as if Allah is saying: O my servants, I am the Samad.. I am the intended.. do not go to others.. your needs are with Me alone.
Al-Asr.. Bring out the best in you
"And by the time, Indeed, man is in loss, Except for those who have believed, and done righteous deeds, and advised each other to truth, and advised each other to patience."
Imam Shafi'i said: "If Allah had not sent down any (part) of the Quran other than Surah Al-Asr, it would have sufficed for people."
Al-Asr is the time that precedes dusk, and the root of the word Al-Asr means to extract the best of something, from it comes the word juice, and from it comes His verse: "And We sent down from the clouds abundant water". Squeeze your day before the sunset of your day, and squeeze your life before the sunset of your life. And the surah motivates you to bring out the best in you, and you will not be able to squeeze your life unless you have good companionship.
The third way:
Khaled advises to activate the Quran in your life: by reading the Quran for implementation.. for action and work.. The most beautiful and powerful way to love and feel the Quran: let the Quran connect you to the best version of yourself.. read and complete the Quran to achieve excellence by the end of Ramadan, because as long as you read the Quran as if it is theoretical speech, and it has no relation to improving your life for the better, you will not love it, nor feel it, nor interact with it.
And Khaled criticized converting the Quran from a book for life improvement to a book for blessings, "and this is a neglect of the Quran even if you read it and complete it three times in Ramadan but do not implement it", considering the problem is "that we believe in the sanctity of the Quran but do not believe in its effectiveness in our lives, we turn to books on human development and have abandoned that which best improves them: the Quran".
Therefore, Khaled urged to activate each verse or surah of the Quran in your life, as it was narrated that when Lady Aisha was asked about how the Messenger of Allah - peace be upon him - was with the Quran, she said: "He was a walking Quran."
And he advised to choose a verse daily for implementation, and it will make you an excellent person, with full certainty that the greatest thing that can fix you is the Quran, as there is no book throughout history that has created an entire nation's civilization except the Quran.
Surah Al-Qamar and the Miracle of the Quran
Khaled stated that the purpose of Surah Al-Qamar is that you must be certain that the greatest miracle that can change you is the Quran, explaining that this Surah included the mention of the five destroyed peoples, namely: Noah, 'Ad, Thamud, Lot, and Pharaoh, and the five prophets sent to them, each came with a miracle, and the five peoples denied them, so they were destroyed in five ways.
And he clarified that between each segment and another speaking about the destruction of a people is the verse: "And indeed, We have made the Quran easy for remembrance, so is there any who will remember?", emphasizing that the supernatural miracles brought by the prophets did not succeed in reforming these peoples, but what succeeds in changing life is the Quran.
And he pointed out that the splitting of the moon happened during the time of the Prophet - peace be upon him: "The Hour has come near, and the moon has split.", and yet it did not succeed in guiding Quraysh, but the moon is the Quran that will change your life.
