Khaberni - American media revealed Washington's intention to withdraw all its military forces from Syria, totaling about a thousand soldiers, within the next two months.
The Wall Street Journal quoted US officials as saying that the decision to end the military presence comes after the Syrian government gained control over the country and the "Syrian Democratic Forces" (SDF) pledged to integrate into the Syrian state institutions, eliminating the need for the continued presence of US forces as field support.
This step comes amid major field and political transformations the country has seen since the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime in late 2024, and the emergence of new security arrangements between Washington and the new Syrian leadership.
Considered withdrawal and handover of bases
For its part, the "CBS" network, citing unnamed officials, confirmed the American orientation, especially after the recent withdrawal of US forces from important strategic bases, notably the Tanf and Shaddadi bases, which were vital centers used by the international coalition led by the United States to fight ISIS.
Reuters quoted a senior US official as saying that the transition will be "considered and based on field conditions", explaining that the "intense" military presence is no longer required in Syria as the Syrian government is ready to take on the primary responsibility in "counterterrorism".
The US envoy to Syria, Tom Brack, recently stated that his country's army's mission in combating ISIS is "99% completed", and that the number of US bases in Syria has decreased from 8 to 3, with the possibility of reducing them to one final base.
Anticipation and tension towards Iran
While Washington is reducing its presence in Syria, it is simultaneously reinforcing its forces in areas close to Iran, while Iranian officials pledged to respond to any attack on their country by targeting American military sites in the region.
American media reported on Wednesday that Washington would be ready to launch strikes against Iran as of the end of this week, although President Donald Trump has not made a final decision yet in this regard.
